It worked very well. In the past such attempts in other industries have been plagued by problems that really, we only now have answers to:

1 Bandwidth
2 Players that work
3 Light/cheap RT interactivity (twitter)

In fact, it probably wasn't worth doing at all until twitter.

Good show.

This is going to be interesting and I have to agree with a poster above that this decesion wasn't meant to improve 'social' it was business.

At the end of the day RM has to decide if he wants his old numbers back but nobody 'paying' for the service or to have far less readers but all of them paying. In any other business the answer would be the later but with one that takes advertiser's money it's much harder.

I'd be interested to see what advertisers think and not PROs. If ad prices have stayed the same do they rather this model as the fewer readers are those who don't mind paying for the paper?

I think it could give them a more neiche readership and audience for advertisers. I only look at the Daily Mail site for a laugh and see what I should be hating this week and I'd never consider myself a Daily Mail reader, so am I as valuable to advertisers as a 'proper' Daily Mail reader, one who might pay if it went all paywall?

I guess we will have to see.

Hi Guy, totally agree that with my business head on, it doesn't make sense to give it away. Although the financials don't look astounding (the Guardian link in the blog speculates), so I wonder if it's worth losing the footfall in order to show such a small return. As long as vs. open advertising the profit through the paywall stacks up, I guess its none of our business.

From a PR perspective, the difficulty isn't in my mind whether or not to pitch to the Times, although I was interested to see how others in the industry thought about it - it's how not to miss coverage, and whether PR focus should change as a result.

I'm genuinely interested to see how it'll go for them.

In a way this is the wrong question to be asking. The Times' objective isn't necessarily to be influential, powerful, retweeted or whatever. It's a business that needs to show a profit, and giving its core product away made no sense to its proprietor.

For Wales to be talking about influence and sharing is to miss the point - this was never about influence or sharing until it can be proven that these things affect monetisation.

I suspect Murdoch is starting from the premise that giving something away for free when it costs money in a newsagent is basically daft, so you work your way backwards from there. I'm not saying he's right but he's doing something rather than nothing about a situation that threatened to become impossible; talk about how it won't be distributed and shared isn't going to be all that interesting to him unless it can be shown on a financial spreadsheet.

Good question. The paywall issue makes it so tricky to monitor media coverage; share important articles and research writers and issues, especially if your clients are charities who simply cannot justify spending their funding on paywalls.

Fantastic post. As a small business journalist, I agree with it all!

The biggest thing that annoys me is badly targeted PR and I can be very critical if I'm sent a release that has nothing to do with the subjects I write about. It's not hard to work out a journalist's target market; just look at their publication. You'll soon know the sort of content that floats their boat.

Twitter can also be useful. Follow hacks and keep an eye on what they tweet about.
