DAVID CAMERON AND JADE TAKE TOP SPOTS IN ONLINE CELEBRITY SEARCH RESULTS - OTHERS LISTED

The world’s biggest people search engine has again unveiled its list of top celebrities that Brits have been searching for since January, finding that previous poll-topper Gordon Brown has slipped out of the top 5 altogether, replaced at the top by David Cameron, who is trailed narrowly by reality TV star Jade Goody who recently lost her high-profile battle with cancer.

Millions of searches from the world’s biggest people search engine have been compiled to find the biggest online celebrity in the eyes of the British public, based on the amount of searches over the last quarter.

Surprisingly, Premier Gordon Brown has not only been ousted from the overall top spot by Leader of the Opposition David Cameron, but doesn’t even feature in the top 5 overall search. Disgraced ex-Royal Bank of Scotland CEO Fred Goodwin was the surprise result at fourth in the list.

www.yasni.co.uk has released the top British searches of Q1 2009 so far. David Cameron was the most searched for Politician, as well as the Number One overall search, beating Jade Goody, Danny Boyle, Fred Goodwin and Kate Winslet. Gordon Brown’s online star has dramatically fallen in just three short months as the UK was officially recognised as being in a recession.

The overall top 5 searches for yasni.co.uk are as follows:

1. David Cameron
2. Jade Goody
3. Danny Boyle
4. Fred Goodwin

Despite only having announced his comeback little under a month ago, Michael Jackson sneaked into the celebrity top searches, due to his comeback tour at the London O2 Arena. Kate Winslet has proved herself popular amongst UK web users, winning the nation’s online affections as well as an Oscar for her role in The Reader, with the same true of top-search Danny Boyle for his direction of hit-film Slumdog Millionaire.

The Jonathan Ross Andrew Sachs scandal, coupled with his mainstream presence on micro-blogging site Twitter has enhanced his standing amongst web-savvy Brits, taking fifth spot in the list of most searched for entertainment celebrities.

A breakdown of the top entertainment celebrity searches yielded the following results:

David Beckham has secured the top spot in terms of the most talked about sports stars with his ‘will he-won’t he?’ move to AC Milan, followed by fellow footballer Ashley Cole, who’s inclusion in the list is likely to be more to do with his marital status than his footballing talent. Ex-England Cricket captain Kevin Pietersen also makes the short list, for his much publicised axing as skipper.

The top 5 searches for sports people in the UK are as follows:

1. David Beckham
2. Ashley Cole
3. Amir Khan
4. Cristiano Ronaldo
5. Kevin Pietersen

Steffen Ruehl, CEO and Co-founder of yasni said,

“Gordon Brown’s fall from public favour online could be construed as a measurable way of monitoring his success as Prime Minister. Whether or not it is a coincidence that Conservative leader David Cameron is the one to oust him from the top spot whilst also topping opinion polls is not for us to decide, but definitely makes for interesting reading.

“If you look at each list, the results really are the ‘who’s who’ of media attention in the past three months, proving that current affairs register highly with Brits as they use our service to sate their need to stay up to date with news and views of the best-known people in the country. That Jade Goody; who battled so bravely against cancer, was second in the list of ‘most searched for people’ so far this year is testament to her wish to highlight the disease.”
