CORONATION STREET CAUSES BRITS TO CRAVE CURRY

Sales stats from the UK’s leading takeaway portal show that British families are most likely to order takeaway food to be delivered in time for their favourite soaps, with 1 in 4 families sitting down to a takeaway together more than 3 times a week.

An interesting order-time trend led the UK’s leading online takeaway portal* www.Just-Eat.co.uk to investigate further, concluding that takeaway lovers are more likely to order food to be delivered at the same time as or just before watching their favourite soaps.

Research by Just-Eat found that 6.50pm was the average time when people were most likely to order takeaways, the time just before millions of British families are sat watching popular TV soaps such as Eastenders and Coronation Street.

This trend prompted research of 1,216 Brits, finding that 1 in 4 families, or 23%, eat takeaway food such as Indian, Chinese, Pizza and Fish and Chips at least three times a week together. 6% of families eat takeaway food of some sort every day.

An interesting result of the research was that families were much more likely to eat takeaway food whilst watching soaps as opposed to sat at a dining table together. 62% of the takeaway lovers polled said that they watched ‘their favourite soap’ whilst eating.

Of those who said that they ordered to eat during their favourite soap, half said they preferred to order in "rather than spend time cooking".

Northerners were much more likely to order food to coincide with watching their favourite soap, as shown below:

Top 5 - percentage of people by region that watched their "favourite soap" whilst eating:

1. North West England – 71%
2. North East England – 67%
3. London – 66%
4. Yorkshire and Humberside – 64%
5. South Wales – 63%

David Buttress, CEO of Just-Eat.co.uk said,

"Despite obviously being dinner-time or thereabouts, the fact that the order-time average was an odd 6.50pm sparked our researchers to question why this could have been, and we are both genuinely surprised with the outcome.

"The results of our customer research clearly show that families are much more likely to eat together whilst watching soaps rather than sit down together around a dining table, so I think it’s safe to assume a correlation of the two. Who would have thought it – Eastenders causes you to crave takeaway food!"
